Unit 4 – Birth Rites

Islam is a religion that affects the whole of a Muslim’s life on earth, everyday of their lives. The first religious ceremony when a baby is born is the Aqiqah ceremony.

The ceremony introduces the child to it’s religion and shows that the parents want to bring it up within Islam, and this happens when the child is seven days old.

During the ceremony, passages from the Qur’an are spoken into the baby’s ear. The Adhan is spoken into the baby’s right ear. The baby’s hair is shaved off and weighed. It’s weight in silver or gold is given as a donation to the poor. Today, parents give whatever they can afford to charity as a way of saying thank you to Allah.

The child is named either by the parents or grandparents. Some names are chosen to honour great Muslims form the past.
